According to NBC Sports, Bodemeister was leading as the horses hit the stretch, but I'll Have Another began to pick up speed and ultimately outran the second favorite in the Derby. Bodemeister finished in second place, with Dullahan third and Went the Day Well in fourth.
I'll Have Another, ridden by jockey Mario Guttierez, started the race at the #19 spot for post positions, making history as the first horse ever to win from that position. The horse was clocked at an unofficial winning time of 2:01.83 to take the top prize of $1,459,600.
For those who saw the race, it certainly had plenty of sentimental favorites in today's race including Union Rags for trainer Michael Matz, and Bodemeister for trainer Bob Baffert. Another was Take Charge Indy, which was ridden by legendary jockey Calvin Borel, looking to add yet another win to his career resume at Churchill Downs.
Instead, it was a first-time Derby competitor Mario Guttierez, who showed plenty of emotion after crossing the finish line during his interview. This was yet another great race with plenty of excitement down the stretch! Once the big win has sunken in for I'll Have Another's team, they'll begin preparations for the next leg of that famous Triple Crown in thoroughbred horse racing!
