Derek Jeter 3,000 Hits! Yankee Captain First in New York History to Reach Milestone
Derek Jeter has reached the 3,000 hit club! Jeter needed two hits to reach the baseball milestone, and he reached that today.
Jeter got hit number 2,999 when he singled in the first inning to lead off the game, and hit number 3,000 for Jeter was even better!
Jeter's 3,000 hit was a home run to left field off of Rays pitcher David Price, and the crowd reacted like the New York Yankees had won the 2011 World Series. The crowd chanted "Derek Jeter" and gave Jeter a two-minute plus standing ovation.
It's hard to believe with all the greats in New York Yankees history, Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio...the list can go on for days, that none of them reached 3,000 hits. That right there shows you how difficult the feat is!
Jeter grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan dreaming one day he would play pro baseball, not for his hometown Detroit Tigers, but for the New York Yankees. He may never have dreamed that he would be one of the greatest New York Yankees of all-time! Jeter has also done something many athletes haven't done, dominated his sport and delivered championships in the city of New York, one of the toughest places in the sports market. Frank Sinatra's song says, "If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!"
Looks like Jeter did. Congratulations to Derek Jeter on reaching 3,000 hits!
