MLB Wild Card Standings 2012: Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles Make Run
The 2012 MLB wild card standings get more exciting by the day, but it is the Oakland Athletics and Baltimore Orioles really turning heads in the American League. On Thursday night (August 30), the Athletics beat the Cleveland Indians 12-7 to run their current win streak to six games.
Coming into the games on Friday night (August 31), the Athletics now have a game lead over the Orioles for the first wild card slot and a 2 1/2 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays for the second slot. At 73-57, the Athletics have definitely played much better than people expected and the team is nipping at the heels of the 77-53 Texas Rangers in the AL West standings.
Baltimore has also been pretty surprising this year, trailing the New York Yankees by just three games in the AL East. That the Orioles are still so far ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox is extremely impressive, but they still have to hold off the Rays down the stretch. Things are definitely going to get exciting as the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels try to play back into contention, but it is clear that Oakland and Baltimore controls this race.
How do you feel the 2012 MLB wild card standings will finish? Do you think that the Oakland Athletics or Baltimore Orioles could win the 2012 World Series?
